As your lease turn-in time approaches, you'll have to make some decisions on which direction to go from there. You can turn in the car and walk away, buy out the lease and keep the car, or take on a new lease contract. Ford offers excellent incentives for returning lessees, making that option especially attractive.

Things that will factor in to your decision will be how much you liked the car, your budget, your preferences for new automotive technology, and what vehicle or vehicles you're considering. Budget is probably the most important consideration, especially if money is tight, since leasing tends to offer more options for those with limited finances or a credit rating that's not stellar. Many lease offers allow a car shopper to get more vehicle for their money than if they financed or bought outright instead. Promotions vary from month to month - or even more often, so talk with your sales rep about the latest offerings at the dealership.

The Lease Turn-in Process
You'll need to mark your calendar for a few crucial dates leading up to your lease's end, since the process must begin a few weeks before the actual end date. The first step is to have the vehicle assessed for its condition and valuation, while also having the odometer reading verified by a third party, so that your final invoice can be generated (whether or not you choose to keep it). It's possible that repairs may be needed to get the car up to par before the lease end date, and you'll need to leave ample time to get that work done. Ford recommends a two-month lead time for scheduling this third-party assessment.

Once you've taken care of those obligations, call the dealership and make the appointment for your turn-in. All that's left before that is to pay the final bill (don't forget to discontinue any automatic payments), clean the car, make sure the owner's manual and all keys are in it, and get it back to the dealership on time. Your final bill may include your last monthly payment, any reconditioning charges, and any penalties for excess miles above your allowed number.

Steps to the Ford Lease Turn-in
Within a couple months of your lease maturity date, you must schedule a third-party inspection to determine the vehicle's actual value based on condition, as well as whether you will be responsible for charges related to miles overage, damage, greater than average wear, or other maintenance issues. This two-month lead time gives you a chance to schedule any necessary repairs before lease maturity.
